Yesterday, the weather was cool and very windy at times. This chased the clouds in and out all afternoon. We caught a little rain a few minutes after taking this picture of two fields. One is plowed, the other planted with (I think) winter wheat. Both are ready for winter. I am not.

There wasn’t much going on this morning. Walked over the Main River and a floodgate was down a little, I suppose to drop the water level behind it.

The wind was blowing pretty hard this morning as I walked the Mainaue between Hassfurt and Augsfeld. But it was still when I took this picture of the trees behind some reeds which grow near the water around here. Judging by how the reeds are growing, the wind must blow pretty steady in one direction most of the time.

I wasn’t quite sure where I was going this morning, but as I continued on a path it eventually made a loop completely around the small lake that is part of the flood plain. Swans are nesting on the back side of this lake. I had never seen swans in flight until this morning, when three of them circled overhead before landing on the far side of the lake. By the time I made it around to where they had landed, the clouds had rolled in. 

Every morning I try to get out early and wander on foot in different directions. I’m trying to learn my way around the area, plus I prefer sunrise to sunset for picture taking. Since I’m an early riser, this works out better for me.

It seems I can’t stay away from the Main River in the mornings. Sitting right on the bank as the Gaisburg came by heading upriver, I nearly was swamped by its deceptively gentle looking wake.

A pair of swans approached us as we walked along a pond near the Main River today. There are many different birds in this area, and most of them shy of humans. These swans have been here for several years. I remember seeing them the last time I was here in 2005. I suppose people have been feeding them. When I didn’t give them anything to eat, they drifted away. This one looked disappointed.

I am still not used to seeing the old and the new together, like in this photograph of a modern car parked in front of an old wall. If I had been here a while I might not have even noticed it.

What’s black and white and red all over?  That’s easy – two versions of the same red scooter, one of which is in black and white.  I saw this Vespa parked on a small side street this morning in Hassfurt.  Is one preferable to the other?

Harbor at Cape Porpoise, Maine

A small coastal village in the town of Kennebunkport, Maine, Cape Porpoise was named by explorer Captain John Smith in 1614 during his exploration of New England. Smith is most remembered for his role in establishing the first permanent English settlement in North America at Jamestown, Virginia, and his brief association with the Virginia Indian girl Pocahontas.  Less well-known is that he is reputed to have defeated, killed and beheaded Turkish commanders in three duels, for which he was knighted by the Transylvanian Prince Sigismund Báthory and given a horse and coat of Arms showing three Turks’ heads. This however, and stories of Pocahontas saving his life, may be embellishments or downright lies, as Smith was considered a trouble maker and was believed to stretch the truth from time to time.

So we should remember that when our leaders lie, they’re just carrying on a long-standing tradition in this country.
